![]() ![]() If, however, the grass has been regularly fed, don't feed anymore until the following spring. This is because an autumn fertiliser with its higher level of phosphorus, may favour the clover more than the grass! If the grass is still in poor condition in late summer and the lawn has been neglected in the past, apply a proprietary autumn lawn fertiliser in September. Do not apply spring or summer fertilisers or sulphate of ammonia after early August.Alternatively, apply lawn fertiliser at 30g per sq m (1oz per sq yd) in April and repeat the dressing at about six-week intervals.Apply only when the soil is moist and preferably in showery weather To minimise scorch risk, bulk it out with three or four times its weight of dry sterilised soil or sharp sand. Even distribution of sulphate of ammonia is essential, or it may scorch or burn the grass. Its nitrogen content encourages grass growth and acts as a deterrent to the clover Apply a single application of a proprietary spring lawn fertiliser followed at six to eight-week intervals by an application of sulphate of ammonia at 15g per sq m (½oz per sq yd).Begin feeding in April when grass growth starts again with the arrival of settled, milder weather Apply lawn fertilisers regularly to strengthen the grass. If the weed is widespread, rake the turf to lift stems before mowing and always use a grass-box on the mower to minimise seed dispersal.Where practical, carefully lift out isolated specimens using a hand fork.To hand-weed, track back the spreading stems to the origin - any rooted stems should lift off quite easily.Try non-chemical control options in the first instance If chemical controls are used, they should be used only in a minimal and highly targeted manner. The RHS believes that avoiding pests, diseases and weeds by good practice in cultivation methods, cultivar selection, garden hygiene and encouraging or introducing natural enemies, should be the first line of control. RHS Botanical Art and Photography Show - TBC July 2024įirst, consider whether this can be done using non-chemical means such as digging out by hand. Only where this is not feasible, look to using a weedkiller.RHS Flower Show Tatton Park - 17-21 July 2024.RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival - 2–7 July 2024.RHS Garden Wisley Flower Show - 5–10 September 2023.RHS Garden Rosemoor Flower Show - 18–20 August 2023.Its worth playing w for me this next year. I tried some a month later w/o as good a results. We had good moisture and not too hot when applied. I used some Pastora on a waterway w KR Bluestem this spring at about 1.25 oz rate and it done an exellent job to my surprise. Sounds like it would be tough on the Bermuda Don't know, but just something to look into. I've read about Panoramic followed by MSMA for similar situation here. Sorry, didn't pay attention that you'd already tried roundup. The bluestem is taller, set it to run above the bermuda. It's not a true "bluestem" not even related to little or big blue - some idiot (our govt ) put it in CRP mixes for a short while here - it's nasty - best thing to do is kill it and kill it again and replant the desired grass - you can't over graze or over hay it Posted 21:13 (#4810293 - in reply to #4809691) Subject: RE: Anybody want to venture a chemical that would kill bluestem grass without killing bermuda? What's the timing and rate on the roundup?īest way I've seen to grow bluestem, is to not fertilize your coastal enough and overgraze it. 5 oz, 1 oz or so, don't think it's very expensive. Not sure if it just comes back or if it lasts. Been told it knocks out the bluestem on the overlap areas. Some people locally have taken up using Cimarron + 2,4d as an alternative to Grazeon. Not sure about that bluestem variety but here heavy grazing will kill bluestem very easily.
